By optical, I'm assuming you stingy CDs and DVDs. The drives that read them are optical drives. The only disadvantage I can judge of is the possibility of less throughput than other channel of storage. And, of course, they are possible to become scratched. This is all rising though, with the introduction of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray medium. The drives that read them have to feel a lot more notes, so the amount of data they read surrounded by a given amount of time is a lot more than that of traditional optical drives.
