A 7900 will give tolerable performance within Oblivian. You can always adjust the settings down to contest your card. As long as your card is above a 6800 you will get mediocre results. Here is a link to an article comparing symbolic cards in Oblivian:

I would recommend purchasing a 7900 beside 512MB or better if you can afford it. THe new 8800's are out but are pricey.

For average games yes....But if you're looking to play oblivion afterwards the answer is no...but yes on average many games released today don't entail much more then 256 devoted video...also another thing to consider is that some games are card whores and they require certian cards for maxiumum playbility...
oh yea, the 7900GS will play anything including void
so no problems there
the lowest card you want to enjoy is a 7600 GS
a 6800 GT or Ultra is okay
and anything 7800GT and above is great.
try the new Geforce 8800 GTS
450-500 bucks for one
and it is Direct X10
