It depends on your specific computer. Some machines need the sticks to be matched pairs. Some consent to you install different sized sticks. Some computers require the largest stick to be in slot # 1, while others can read the memory everything slot is used. I'd suggest you used the "configurator" at Crucial Memory to find out the answers for your computer.

You will have 1.5 gigs or extremely close to it.
Put the 1 gig stick surrounded by the DIMM1 slot which would be closest to the processor.
I just received my 1 see stick and installed it in my work computer yesterday so that I hold 1.5 gigs now.

Look at your motherboard and see how many slots for memory it have (most have four.) If you already enjoy 512mb of DDR RAM, then your should enjoy three free slots. If your computer says that it is lone capable of have 2gb of RAM, your motherboard probaly doesn't support 1GB sticks of RAM. Think of it this way. If your motherboard have four slots for RAM, and your computer supports up to 2GB of RAM, then your motherboard can simply support 512mb sticks of RAM, otherwise your computer would be able to enjoy 4GB of RAM.
Also, (I'm not familiar next to the speeds of DDR RAM so if 4200 is the fastest disregard what I say within this paragraph.) If your current RAM is 4200, then don't buy a faster type RAM for extra money because it will clock itself slower to contest the other RAM.
