When buying external thorny drive what features to look for compatibility beside laptop rock-hard drive?

My laptop unyielding drive has 5400rpm so will it be ok if I buy an external unyielding drive which has 7200rpm and doesn't necessitate external power? I have three USB 2.0 port on the laptop.

yes no problem and will not do any affect on your interal HD ,i have laptop and external USB HD,iam using them adjectives time.
