You are trying to install an upgrade publication of Windows XP. That is your problem. If you have a previous magazine of windows, close to 98 or ME, on a cd, then put that surrounded by when it asks for a previous version. That is your best pick. Otherwise you need a full install disc and product knob.
I'd install DOS and format the drive. Then just inserting the disk into the disc or DVD drive should just work.
obviously you can, when it says its questioning for previous copies of windows and dont find any... thats a dutiful thing, is here no way to verbs, create partition, and select the hedge to install to?
Possibly you are trying to install from an upgrade CD which wishes the previous version of Windows to install properly.

Obtain a full-version compact disc and try installing from that.

Usually when installing to a new rugged drive, it will give you option for formatting the drive...such as how many partition, type of file system, etc.
