Boot problem, black peak adjectives the road, in need the XP logo!?

I hold a Compaq, 3.2 Ghz Intel, 512 ddram , 200Gb Maxtor hard-disk a nasty aching in my a**! When I push the start button , nil happens , purely a black screen( no signal) , the harddisk turns on ,along with the DVD-rom , Cd writter etc...everything is on , but it doesn't boot! I expect it's a harddisk problem , but I'm not sure , so I need a second judgment! Thank you!

Answer:
comon problems that cause this are memory and motherboard problems, and other hardware.
first steps to find out what go bad would be to disconect items one at a time untill you find the item that will consent to you boot as far as the bios.
if you think its the sturdy disk try that first, but my guess would be the memory, if it has more afterwards one memory chip installed remove one and try, then replace it and try the other.
a second point to try would be resetting the bios chip, do that by unpluging the computer and remove the bios battery for a minute, later you will have to reprogram some settings but it may fix no boot problem.

try re-starting your computer. When the black screen appears, right click and select properties. Select system restore.
perchance ram is broken
You didn't utter if you heard a honk or not so I would check the video card first then the motherboard.
