Depends on how much you want to spend. And it also depends if you want to use DirectX 10. If you don't play seriously of games and don't need DirectX 10, the Radeon X1650XT is a wearing clothes card and is excellent for all current games and will run you $130, http://www.newegg.com/product/product.as... (I close to this one because it has support for HDCP for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD content, data the monitor must also support HDCP for it to work).
If you are indeed running Vista, stick with ATi for in a minute since nvidia can't seem to carry their act together near drivers. The current nvidia drivers for Vista offer little more than deep functionality and the beta version is lately awful. nvidia isn't ready for Vista but ATi is more than near.
That being said, if you do play games, you will want to dawdle for DirectX 10 enabled video cards to come out on the market (unless you want to spend $320 for a 320MB nvidia 8800GTS). I wouldn't buy a nvidia card for use on Vista nonetheless. So for DirectX 10 support wait for the Radeon X2600 or X2800 series and possibly nvidia will get their crap together earlier the next book of Windows comes out.

OK, you you're looking at a PCI-E video card upgrade. But the cross-examine is why? Are you looking for a video card for 3D gaming, or general use close to web surfing, e-mail, viewing photos etc?
Gaming cards start at just about $100 and go up- but there's no principle to buy a $250 card if you're not playing 3D games like Oblivion, Battlefield 2142, Vanguard etc.
If you're lately looking for something a little faster, ATI's Radeon X1650 PRO and Nvidia's GeForce 7600GS are currently rate by Tomshardware as the best buys under $100.
If your not a gamer and if your card is compatible near Vista, your card is good satisfactory. Only buy a PCI Express X16 Video Card.
