How to know whether to first append contemporary driver software, after connect the exotic lateral hardware or vice-versa?

urrently I'm interested that answers pertain to Win98SE and/or WinXP Pro, But eventually I'd similar to tom know the answer for Linix too, probably the Debian Distribution.
My thanks to adjectives who try to help me!

Answer:
Try to install the drivers first rotten the cdrom.
It may tell you that the lateral was not found.
In this grip you will have to install the device first.
If it is a graphics card i would remove the current drivers and install a generic VGA driver.using the supply hardware option within the control panel. Then reboot to see if the device is PnP friendly in which skin windows will install the drivers for you.
Otherwise you will be prompted to install the drivers yourself by directing window to search your driver disk.
I hope this help.
