anybody want to help me choose between them? or recommend any other graphics card for in the region of $150 USA or less?

The 7900 is going to win better fps in almost every activity. The 8600 has dx10 technology but few games use it and you will not see much of a presentation gain when you do play those games.
Um, it's like human being torn between a Corvette and a Toyota Camry. The 7900GS isn't even as nice as a 7900GT.
The 8600GT in a heartbeat!! I can't believe that price for a DirectX10 card!! :)
reasonably simply, go near the 8600 as it will give you direct x 10 support. The 7900 gs cannot.
How in the order of Radeon x1950 pro. Try newegg. lowest priced one there is $145.99 and a $20 rebate= $125.99
Plus x1950 pro beat a 7900gs in most games.
