If your motherboard solely supports 2 GB and has 4 slots next it means it cannot support more than 512 MB per slot. So your second solution of 4 512 sticks would be the proper solution. If you have 2*256 memory modules, my suggestion would be that you catch matching modules for the other 2 slots. These could be any 512 or 1Gb each.
Chances are apposite that the machine uses them within pairs.

Well... you could have 2) 256 Mb and 2) 512 Mb giving you your 1.5 Gb of RAM. They hold to be in pairs, so getting the 1 1Gb RAM wouldn't work. So, you could any get the 4) 512 Mb, (giving you 2 Gb), or you could lately get the 2) 512 Mb, and return with your 1.5 Gb without the 1 Gb Memory card.
This memory does not enjoy to installed in pairs. That be Old school push (SIMM)

Pros: VERY solid memory. I have 1x1GB and 2x512MB sticks contained by a NVIDIA nForce4 SLI (compatiable with AMD of course) mobo from Gigabyte. Together they work similar to a dream. The 1GB stick is a better deal price sage when compaired with the 2x512 sticks. I enjoy one more slot unscrew for expasion, and for the moment the 1GB stick is cheaper than the 2x512 sticks. I totally reccomend this for anyone who wants solid and dependable RAM for their computer for a appropriate price.
Cons: They are only 180-pin vs. the newer 240-pin. But that's because it's a age group 'older'. (I use that phrase lightly cuz it's not that old) Other than that, I haven't have any problems with installing it or keeping it.
Other Thoughts: The rationale why i chose this memory vs. some others that were rather cheaper was the WARRENTY. LIFETIME WARRENTY is something that is to say hard to argue next to, and that is why you're paying a short time extra for the same ammount of memory. To me, I'd to some extent pay a touch more knowing that no matter what, It'll be replaced.
