My external hardrive is gone down. PLEASE HELP??

it is a 2.5'' 40 GB EXT.HDD, next to USB, it is used on a XP windows. I can ear it spinning but the computer won't read it. I HAVE changed the USB paddock, but no luck. It seems to be a problem of the hardrive itself. What can I do? and how much will it cost?

Answer:
Are you sure its a problem next to the drive itself? It could be the OS. Double-check by booting from a Linux Live CD.

Sometimes installing drivers fail. Try putting your drive in a different USB port and see if that works. Also, you may want to check and see if it is available below the Removable storage control panel. Right click on my computer and press on manage. Then shift to storage. Look under disk government, do you see the drive there? It may obligation to be formatted and given a drive letter. Give that a shot and see what comes of it. You may inevitability to mark the screen as active. If you can't see the drive surrounded by that panel, then something could be a problem on the hardware stratum.
