What are the specs I entail to look out for when buying a portable complex drive? HELP REQUIRED...please!?

Like the minimum verbs rate...what does it have to be? Should it own a fan? Is USB more easier to use afterwards Firewire? What is the current maximum gb available for a portable hard drive? and any other far-reaching thingd to look out for.... By the way I singular need a portable easier said than done drive because I am running out of space on my laptop and need some where on earth else to store my videos, photos, music and word documents...but be wondering if I have a WMA directory saved on my portable sturdy drive would it be as easy as 'plug and play' to play it stern or would I need to verbs the files back on to my laptop complicated drive to be able to keep under surveillance, hear or see the file? Thanks p.s...Could you also make clear to me whether there are better power and reputable brands then other when buying portable unyielding drives and does price really matter?

For all-out, high-speed recitation, FireWire 400 is the interface of choice. For convenience and compatibility among multiple computers, USB 2.0 is the way to jump.

For Drive Specifications look for Buffer Size(Cache) of 8 or 16MB, 2 MB is poor choice.
